Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has taken major corrective action in India after facing government scrutiny over the circulation of obscene and inappropriate content linked to its AI tool, Grok. According to official sources, the platform has deleted more than 600 accounts and blocked thousands of posts found to be in violation of Indian laws.

What Sparked the Controversy
The issue came to light after several users allegedly used Grok AI to generate and share sexually explicit and objectionable images, including content targeting women. The material triggered concerns over user safety, dignity, and misuse of artificial intelligence on large digital platforms.

Government Steps In
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) took a strict stance, asking X to explain how such content bypassed moderation systems. The government reportedly warned that failure to act could result in consequences under the Information Technology Act and related digital safety regulations, including a potential threat to X’s safe-harbour protections.

X Admits Lapse, Takes Action
Following the intervention, X acknowledged shortcomings in content moderation and initiated a cleanup drive. As part of this action:
Over 600 user accounts linked to the content were permanently removed
Thousands of posts were blocked within India
The company assured authorities it would comply with Indian laws going forward
X also indicated that it is strengthening safeguards around AI-generated content to prevent similar incidents.
